Personal arcana and numerology
Are people with the same personal arcana alike?
Published on
Not necessarily. Many different dates result in the same personal arcana, and the tradition reads the card as a theme, not a mold. Two people with the same card live out that theme in different ways, depending on their history, their context and their choices.
Why different dates give the same card
The calculation reduces a total that can range from 12 to 71 down to a number between 1 and 22. Since there are thousands of possible dates between 1900 and 2100 and only 22 results, many dates land on the same card.
An example with made-up dates: 11/07/1988 and 07/11/1988 give 44, which reduces to 8. Meanwhile 03/15/1990 gives 37, which reduces to 10. Very different dates can coincide, with no connection between the people.
The arcana is a theme, not a personality
In the tradition, each card points to a subject, like structure, courage or a fresh start. That subject can show up in opposite ways: a person with The Emperor may be organized and welcoming, another may be controlling, and yet another may be precisely learning to let go of control.
That is why comparing cards between people says little about how they act. What counts are each person's choices and context, which no sum of numbers can capture.
What about twins, or people born on the same day?
People born on the same date have exactly the same personal arcana, since the calculation uses only day, month and year. Twins, for example, share the card, unless they are born on different sides of midnight.
In that case, the date rules: 12/31/1999 gives 12 + 31 + 28 = 71, which reduces to 8, and 01/01/2000 gives 1 + 1 + 2 = 4. One day of difference changed the card from Strength to The Emperor. This example is made up, but it shows that the calculation is sensitive to the calendar and not to anyone's life.
What to do with this realization
Use a shared card as a topic of conversation, not as proof of affinity. Talking about how each person lives the theme can be more interesting than finding out the card is the same.
Remember that the personal arcana is symbolic and has no scientific proof. For decisions about health, finances or legal matters, consult professionals.
Frequently asked questions
- How many dates give the same personal arcana?
- Many. There are thousands of possible dates between 1900 and 2100 for only 22 results, so each card is shared by a lot of people.
- Does having the same arcana as someone mean affinity?
- No. It can be a good topic of conversation, but the tradition does not guarantee affinity or compatibility from the card.
- Do twins always have the same personal arcana?
- When they are born on the same date, yes. If they are born on different days, for example on opposite sides of midnight, the cards can differ.
