How do you calculate your personal arcana from your birth date?

Published on

Your personal arcana is the Major Arcana card linked to your birth date. The calculation adds the month, the day and the digits of the year. If the total is above 22, you add the digits of the result until it falls between 1 and 22. That final number points to the matching card.

The formula behind the calculation

The sum has three parts: the month number, the day number and the total of the four digits of the year. You add them all together. Note that the day and the month go in whole, without splitting their digits.

Then comes the reduction. As long as the result is greater than 22, you replace it with the sum of its own digits. Once the value lands between 1 and 22, you stop: that is your personal arcana.

Why is the limit 22?

The tarot has 22 Major Arcana, from The Fool to The World. That is why the reduction stops at 22 instead of continuing down to a single digit, as in ordinary numerology. In the deck's own numbering, The Fool is 0, but in this calculation it takes position 22.

This means numbers like 10, 15 or 21 are valid results and do not need to be reduced again. Each one matches its own card.

Three examples, step by step

Here is how the method works in practice, using three made-up dates, written as day/month/year.

  • 15/03/1990: month 3 + day 15 + (1+9+9+0 = 19) = 37. Since 37 is above 22, add 3+7 = 10. The personal arcana is 10, Wheel of Fortune.
  • 29/12/1999: month 12 + day 29 + (1+9+9+9 = 28) = 69. Since 69 is above 22, add 6+9 = 15. The personal arcana is 15, The Devil.
  • 01/01/1991: month 1 + day 1 + (1+9+9+1 = 20) = 22. It is already at the limit, so it stays 22, which matches The Fool.

Cautions when interpreting the result

The personal arcana is a symbolic tradition. It has no scientific backing, and it does not determine who you are or what will happen. Use the result as a theme to think about, never as a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know my birth time to calculate my personal arcana?
No. The calculation only uses the day, month and year of birth. Time and place are not part of the sum.
Can the personal arcana be greater than 22?
No. If the sum goes above 22, you reduce it by adding the digits until you reach a value between 1 and 22.
Is there more than one method for calculating the personal arcana?
Yes, there are variations between authors and schools. This site uses the sum of the month, the day and the digits of the year, reduced down to the limit of 22.
