Personal arcana and numerology
What is the soul arcana and how does it relate to the personal arcana?
Published on
The soul arcana is the card you get by reducing your personal arcana to a single digit, adding its numerals. If your personal arcana is 10 to 22, it produces a second card. If it is already 1 to 9, the two coincide. Tradition reads the personal arcana as the visible face and the soul arcana as the core.
How the second card appears
After calculating your personal arcana, look at the result. If it has two digits, add them until only one is left. That last number is the soul arcana.
The chain of reductions shows the full path. Take 19, for example: it becomes 10 and then 1, so The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. The 22 becomes 4, from The Fool to The Emperor.
- Arcana 10 to 18: add the two digits (13 becomes 4, 18 becomes 9).
- Arcana 19: goes through 10 and ends at 1.
- Arcana 20, 21 and 22: become 2, 3 and 4.
- Arcana 1 to 9: the personal and the soul arcana are the same card.
How the two cards talk to each other
In the traditional reading, the personal arcana describes how you tend to show up in the world, while the soul arcana points to a more intimate motivation. That is why the pairing is often read as a tension or a complement.
One example: someone with 15 (The Devil) and 6 (The Lovers) might reflect on attachments and choices that feed each other. Someone with 22 and 4 might think about how to balance spontaneity and structure.
When the two coincide
If your personal arcana is between 1 and 9, there is no second card. Tradition understands the theme as more concentrated, but that is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage.
All of this is symbolic and has no scientific proof. Use the cards to think, and seek professionals for decisions about health, money or legal matters.
