Tarot journal: what should you write down after each reading?

Published on

A tarot journal keeps a record of each reading so you can learn from your own history. Write down the date, the question, the cards, your first impression and, later, what actually happened. A few lines are enough. The value lies in rereading and noticing patterns over time.

The minimum worth recording

The simpler the record, the easier it is to keep. Start with the basics: date, question and the cards that came up, noting whether any were reversed. That alone lets you return to a reading months later and understand the context.

In the site's journal, at /diario, your readings are saved and you can add notes to each one. It also shows which cards appear most often for you.

Write your impression before the meaning

Record your first reaction to the card before opening any book. A line like “this image felt heavy” or “it reminded me of yesterday's conversation” is worth more than copying the definition from a guide.

This is the part that teaches you to read in your own voice. You can find textbook meanings anywhere; your association is yours alone.

  • Date and time.
  • The question or theme of the reading.
  • Cards, positions and whether they were reversed.
  • First impression in one or two sentences.
  • How you felt when you finished.

Come back later to close the loop

Days or weeks later, add one line: what actually happened? This follow-up shows what made sense, what was exaggerated and where you projected expectations.

Not everything has to have “come true.” Noting the mismatches too keeps the journal honest and keeps the reading in the realm of reflection, not promise.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to write a lot in my tarot journal?
No. Three or four lines per reading already make a useful record. Entries that are too long often lead people to abandon the habit.
Paper or digital journal?
Both work. Paper invites you to write slowly, and digital makes it easier to search and spot patterns. Choose the one you will actually use.
Is it worth recording readings that seemed meaningless?
Yes, it is. Rereading a confusing reading some time later often reveals something that was not clear in the moment.

Educational content, for reflection. Tarot does not replace medical, legal or financial advice.
