How do you clean and care for a tarot deck?

Published on

To care for a tarot deck, keep your hands clean and dry, store the cards in a box or cloth away from moisture and sunlight, and wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. If you like, add a symbolic gesture of renewal, such as shuffling in silence. It is entirely optional.

Physical care for the cards

Cards are paper, and paper suffers from moisture, heat and the oil on your hands. Wash and dry your hands before handling them, and avoid eating or drinking over the deck. These small habits make cards last for years.

To remove dust or light marks, wipe with a soft, dry cloth, such as microfiber. Avoid damp or chemical products, which can stain the cards or peel the finish.

  • Store in a box, a fabric pouch or a cloth.
  • Keep away from direct sun, heat and moisture.
  • Do not leave the deck in the bathroom or kitchen.
  • Use a smooth, clean surface for reading.

Symbolic cleansing: optional and personal

Many people like a gesture of renewal when starting a new phase or after an intense reading. It might be shuffling in silence, opening a window or simply putting the cards back in order.

This gesture has no proven power. It is worth what it does for you: it marks an ending and a beginning and helps you enter the next reading with a lighter mind.

When it is time to replace a deck

Cards that are very worn, stuck together or peeling at the edges make shuffling hard and are distracting. If that happens, consider replacing the deck. Keeping the old one as a keepsake is an option.

If you simply stopped liking the deck's look, that is fine too. You will read better with images that speak to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to cleanse my deck energetically?
It is not required. It is a symbolic custom that some people like to keep, with no scientific evidence behind it. Physical care, on the other hand, really does help the deck last.
Can I leave my deck in the sun?
It is not recommended. Sunlight fades the colors and can warp the paper. Prefer a cool, dry, shaded place.
Can someone else touch my deck?
They can, if you are happy with that. Some people prefer to keep their deck to themselves, which is a personal choice with no single rule.
