What should you do when a tarot reading feels heavy?

Published on

If a tarot reading feels heavy, you can stop at any moment. Close the cards, breathe slowly, drink some water and step away. Remember that tarot does not predict the future and that a hard card is a symbol. If the distress lingers, talk to someone or see a professional.

You can stop at any moment

Nobody is obliged to finish a spread. If the mood got heavy or your anxiety rose, stop. Put the cards away, turn the pile on its side and breathe.

Moving your body helps: stand up, drink water, wash your face, open a window. These simple actions pull your attention away from what the card stirred up and bring you back to the present.

  • Close the cards and step away from the table.
  • Breathe slowly, making your exhale longer than your inhale.
  • Drink water and change rooms.
  • Talk to someone you trust.

Hard cards are not sentences

The Tower, Death or The Devil frighten by name, but they usually speak of change, endings and patterns that hold us back. They are images to think with, not announcements of doom.

Ask yourself what this card might be showing about what you already feel. Often the weight comes from something real that came before the reading, and the card simply gave it a name.

When the weight stays

If the distress does not pass within a few hours, or if the reading brought up thoughts of hopelessness or of hurting yourself, seek human support. Talk to a friend, a family member or a mental health professional.

In Brazil, the CVV answers at 188, at any hour and free of charge. If there is immediate risk, call SAMU (192), Brazil's emergency medical service, or go to an emergency room. In the US, call or text 988, or 911 in an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Death card mean someone is going to die?
No. In tarot, Death symbolizes transformation and the end of cycles. It is a card of transition, not a literal prediction.
Should I redraw the spread if something bad came up?
Avoid redrawing just to get a better answer. It is more useful to reflect on what the card stirred in you and, if needed, pause the practice for a while.
Can tarot make my anxiety worse?
For some people, yes, especially if the cards are read as certainty. If that happens, cut back or stop the practice and seek a health professional.
