What is the Grand Tableau (Mesa Real) in the Lenormand?

Published on

The Grand Tableau (Mesa Real) is the most complete Lenormand spread: all 36 cards are laid out in four rows of nine. The reading looks at the cards around the significator, the card that represents you, and at the house system, where each position carries the theme of the card with the same number.

How the table is laid out

In this site's Grand Tableau, the 36 cards are spread across four rows of nine columns. The positions are called House 1 to House 36, following the order of the deck.

Because it is the broadest spread, it is usually used for a general overview of life rather than a specific question. On this site, it is a premium spread.

Significator and house system

The significator is the card that represents the person being read. Usually The Man (28) is used for a man and The Woman (29) for a woman. The cards around it show what is close to the person.

In the house system, each position carries the theme of the card with the same number. If The Stars lands in House 4, for example, it is read in the territory of The House, meaning home. It is as if the position were the place, and the card that lands there, what happens in it.

  • House 1: theme of The Rider (news, movement).
  • House 4: theme of The House (home, stability).
  • House 24: theme of The Heart (affection).

Where to start

Start by locating the significator and read the cards around it: above, below and on both sides. Then notice how the distant cards connect to the themes of the houses where they landed.

The Grand Tableau takes practice. Master the Three-Card Line and the Five-Card Line first. As with any reading, it is a symbolic exercise and does not replace professional support.
