Lenormand (Baralho Cigano)
What is the Lenormand deck (Baralho Cigano) and how does it work?
Published on
The Lenormand deck, known in Brazil as the Baralho Cigano, is a traditional oracle of 36 cards illustrated with everyday symbols, such as the house, the ship, the letter and the key. It is read by combining cards into short sentences. It works as a tool for reflection, not as a guarantee of prediction.
An oracle of 36 symbols
The Lenormand deck has 36 cards numbered 1 to 36, from The Rider to The Cross. Each one shows a simple, recognizable symbol: The House, The Ship, The Book, The Key, The Sun. There are no reversed cards, so each image has a single base meaning.
In Europe this format is known as the Petit Lenormand, and in Brazil it became popular under the name Baralho Cigano. Each card also usually carries the mark of a regular playing card, such as 9♥ on The Rider and 10♠ on The Ship.
How a reading is done
Instead of interpreting one isolated card with many layers of symbolism, the reader joins neighboring cards and forms a sentence. One card works like a noun and the other like an adjective. This makes the reading practical and tied to concrete situations.
- You shuffle while thinking of a clear question.
- You choose a spread, such as the Three-Card Line or the Grand Tableau.
- You read the cards together, paying attention to position and neighbors.
What to expect from this tradition
The Lenormand is a cartomancy tradition passed down orally and in writing, with variations from region to region. It has no scientific proof of predicting anything. The healthiest use is as a mirror: the images help you organize what you already feel and look at the subject more calmly.
For health, legal matters or financial decisions, always seek a qualified professional. A reading can accompany your reflection, but it does not replace that support.
