Comparisons and differences
Thoth Tarot vs Rider-Waite-Smith: what is the difference?
Published on
The 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith uses clear scenes and accessible symbolism. The Thoth, by Aleister Crowley with art by Frieda Harris, was published in 1969 and has abstract art, more esoteric layers and some different card names. The Thoth usually asks for more study.
Similar roots, different paths
Both decks draw on the tradition of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a British esoteric society of the late 19th century. The Rider-Waite-Smith, conceived by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, gave scenes to every card.
The Thoth was designed by Aleister Crowley, painted by Lady Frieda Harris and published in 1969. The art is geometric and richly layered, and it carries correspondences with astrology and Kabbalah that the author wanted to make visible in the cards.
What changes in the cards
In the Thoth, some cards have different names. Strength appears as Lust, Justice as Adjustment, Temperance as Art. In the court, the titles are Knight, Queen, Prince and Princess, instead of Page, Knight, Queen and King.
The numbered cards of the Minor Arcana also get their own titles in the Thoth, which gives each one a sharply defined theme. In the Rider-Waite-Smith, the theme comes from the scenes, which can be read more freely.

Who each one suits
The Rider-Waite-Smith is the most common choice for beginners because it has abundant study material. The Thoth tends to attract people who are already interested in astrology, Kabbalah and esoteric symbolism and are willing to study a separate manual.
Neither one proves predictions. Choose by the reading style that suits you, not because you think one is truer than the other.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the Thoth hard for beginners?
- It tends to be more demanding, because it mixes symbols from several traditions and changes some names. People who like to study see that as a plus, and those who want to start right away may prefer a deck with scenes.
- Can I read the Thoth with Rider-Waite-Smith meanings?
- Partly. The Major Arcana share common themes, but cards like Lust and Adjustment have nuances of their own. It is worth using the Thoth manual for the details.
- Who created the Thoth?
- The concept is by Aleister Crowley, and the painting is by Lady Frieda Harris. The deck was published in 1969, after both of them had died.
