What Does The Chariot Card Mean in Tarot?

Published on

The Chariot is the seventh Major Arcana card and symbolizes determination, focus and forward movement. It shows someone steering opposing forces in the same direction through willpower. It can indicate victory through effort and discipline, or, when out of balance, loss of control and aimless haste.

What happens in the image

The card shows a charioteer standing in a chariot, beneath a starry canopy, in front of a city. Instead of holding reins, he guides two sphinxes, one light and one dark, that seem to want to go in different directions. The figure suggests that direction comes from will, not brute force.

These two sphinxes are usually read as opposing impulses within the same person, such as fear and courage, reason and emotion, desire and duty. The Chariot does not eliminate either one, it learns to drive them together.

Focus, direction and achievement

When The Chariot appears, the theme is usually movement. It may be time to start a project, pass an exam, close a chapter or resolve something that has been put off. The card asks for decision and consistency.

An example: someone is torn between accepting a job and continuing to study. The Chariot does not choose for her, but asks whether there is a plan that combines both and who is in command of the decision.

  • Keywords: will, discipline, victory, travel, progress, self-mastery.
  • Useful question: what am I driving, and where to?

The Chariot in love and at work

In love, it can indicate initiative, like taking the first step, moving to another city for the relationship or overcoming an obstacle together. It can also warn of someone who treats the relationship as a contest and always wants to win.

At work, it speaks of ambition, goals and execution. It is a strong card for deadlines, deliveries and launches. In a career reading, it suggests acting with method instead of waiting for the perfect moment.

When The Chariot is reversed

Reversed, the charioteer loses control of the sphinxes. There may be scattered energy, impulsiveness, aggression or the feeling of running hard without getting anywhere.

It can also indicate a block: you know where you want to go but cannot get moving. In that case, shrink the goal to one small, verifiable step. Tarot does not guarantee results, it only helps you name what is happening.

Frequently asked questions

Does The Chariot indicate travel?
It can, since the image suggests movement from place to place. But the main meaning is inner movement and determination, and travel is just one possible reading.
Is The Chariot a lucky card?
It speaks more of effort than of luck. The card's victory depends on focus, discipline and the ability to steer opposing impulses.
What is The Chariot's number?
It is the seventh Major Arcana card, VII, the last of the first stage of The Fool's Journey, before Strength (VIII).
