The Fool's Journey: the 22 Major Arcana cards in order

Published on

The Fool's Journey is a way of reading the 22 Major Arcana as a story: The Fool (0) sets out with no experience, passes through encounters, crises and discoveries, and arrives at The World (XXI). It is not an ancient tarot rule, but a popular symbolic reading that helps you memorize the order of the cards.

What is the Fool's Journey?

The Major Arcana run from 0 to XXI, and The Fool is the only card without a fixed place in the story. The idea of the journey is to treat him as a character who passes through each of the other 21 cards, learning something from every one.

It is a modern interpretation, popularized in the twentieth century, and not an official method. Even so, it is useful because it turns a list of symbols into a plot that is easy to remember.

The three stages of the journey

Many people divide the Major Arcana into three blocks of seven cards, with The Fool as the starting point and The World as the arrival. Each block has its own theme.

  • First stage (I to VII, from The Magician to The Chariot): learning about the outer world, with identity, intuition, family, authority, choices and action.
  • Second stage (VIII to XIV, from Strength to Temperance): looking inward, with courage, solitude, change, justice, surrender, transformation and balance.
  • Third stage (XV to XXI, from The Devil to The World): facing shadows and illusions, and then finding clarity, renewal and completion.

How to use the journey in a reading

When a card appears, you can ask where in the story the person seems to be. The Tower, for example, suggests a rupture in the middle of the third stage, while The Star comes after it as a breath of fresh air.

The journey also helps you see what was left behind or what comes next. This does not predict anything; it simply organizes your reflection on the present moment.

Limits of this reading

Life does not follow the order of the cards. Someone can live The World and The Tower in the same month, and that is perfectly fine.

Use the journey as a map, not as destiny. Tarot has no scientific evidence of predicting anything, and the sequence is there to give context to the images.

The traditional order runs from The Fool (0) to The World (XXI), passing through The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun and Judgement.
Why is The Fool number zero?

No. It is a modern symbolic reading, created to make studying easier. It is popular, but it is not part of tarot's historical origins.
