Personal arcana and numerology
What is the year card and how do you calculate it?
Published on
The year card is the Major Arcana that represents your cycle from one birthday to the next. The calculation is the same as for the personal arcana, but swaps the birth year for the current year. Before your birthday, the previous year applies. It serves as a theme for reflection, not a prediction.
The calculation, step by step
You add the month and day of your birth to the digits of the year you are living in. If the total is above 22, you reduce it by adding the numerals until it falls between 1 and 22.
The year that counts is the one of your last birthday. If your birthday is October 20 and today is October 8, 2026, you are still in the cycle that began in 2025.
- Born on 15/03 (March 15), 2026 cycle: 3 + 15 + (2+0+2+6 = 10) = 28.
- 28 is above 22, so 2+8 = 10: Wheel of Fortune.
How to interpret it
The year card is read as a theme that runs through the months, not as a list of events. It suggests a subject to observe, such as a fresh start, boundaries, rest or harvest.
It can be useful to compare it with the personal arcana: one is a fixed theme and the other changes with each cycle. Ask what the year is asking of you.
What it does not do
The year card does not guarantee outcomes, does not define luck and does not replace planning. It is a symbolic tradition with no scientific proof.
For career, health or money decisions, use concrete information and, when needed, the help of professionals.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the year card change on New Year's Day or on my birthday?
- On your birthday. The cycle runs from one birthday to the next, and before that date the previous year applies.
- Is the year card the same as the personal arcana?
- The method of adding is the same, but the year card uses the current year and changes with each cycle.
- Can I calculate the card for a past year?
- Yes. Just swap the year in the sum for the year of the cycle you want to look at, which can help you review phases of your life.
