Reversed Major Arcana: what changes in the meaning of the cards?

Published on

A reversed Major Arcana card is not necessarily the opposite of the card. It usually indicates that the energy is blocked, internal, delayed or in excess. Reading reversals is optional: many readers use them, others read everything upright. What matters is choosing one method and sticking with it.

Do you need to read reversed cards?

It is not mandatory. Many beginner readers prefer to keep every card upright and only add reversals later, once they know the basic meanings well.

The key is to be consistent: if you shuffle in a way that lets cards turn upside down, you will need to interpret both positions.

Four ways to read a reversed card

There is no single rule. The approaches below work well and can be combined depending on the situation.

  • Blocked energy: the card's theme is present but does not flow, like The Magician with talent and no action.
  • Internal energy: what the card shows is happening inside and does not yet appear on the outside.
  • Excess or lack: the card appears exaggerated or absent, like Strength without patience.
  • Opposite: in some cases the meaning flips, but this is the least common.

Examples in the Major Arcana

The Sun reversed usually indicates a dimmer glow rather than total darkness: the joy is there, but covered up. Wheel of Fortune reversed can speak of resistance to a change of phase.

Death reversed, in turn, shows attachment to something that has already ended, not the opposite of transformation.

How to avoid frightening readings

A reversed card is not a bad omen. Often it is an invitation to look at a blind spot more carefully.

Remember that tarot has no scientific evidence of predicting anything. Use the positions as clues for reflection, not as a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Does a reversed card mean the opposite of the upright card?
Not always. In general it shows the same energy in a blocked, internal or unbalanced form, and not necessarily an opposite one.
Should beginners use reversed cards?
It is a choice. Starting with upright cards only usually makes learning easier, and reversals can come in later.
How can I tell if a card is reversed?
Look at the image: if the main figure is upside down relative to you, the card is reversed. This depends on how the deck was shuffled and turned over.
