Personal arcana and numerology
What is the difference between the personal arcana and the sun sign?
Published on
The sun sign is set by the Sun's position in the zodiac on your birth date, and there are 12 possibilities. The personal arcana comes from a numerical sum of your date and points to one of the 22 Major Arcana. They are different symbolic systems: one is astrological, the other numerological.
Origin and method
The sun sign depends on date ranges through the year. Anyone born between certain dates belongs to the same sign, in any year.
The personal arcana uses a sum: month, day and the digits of the year, reduced down to 22. Because the year is part of the calculation, two people born on the same day and month but in different years usually have different arcana.
What each one tends to describe
In popular astrology, the sun sign describes temperament traits tied to elements and qualities. In the tarot, the personal arcana is read through an illustrated card, with its imagery, symbols and themes.
Some schools link signs and arcana, but that connection varies by author and is not part of the site's personal arcana calculation.
One does not replace the other
You can have a sign known for determination and an arcana tied to introspection, and both readings can be useful for thinking about yourself. They do not have to agree.
Neither has scientific proof that it describes personality or predicts events. Treat them as symbolic languages and, for health, money or legal matters, seek professionals.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my personal arcana determined by my sign?
- No. The arcana comes from a numerical sum of your birth date, with no direct link to the sun sign.
- Do two people with the same sign have the same arcana?
- Not necessarily. The year is part of the arcana calculation, so people with the same sign usually have different arcana.
- Which of the two is more reliable?
- Neither has scientific proof. Choose whichever makes more sense to you as a tool for reflection.
