Personal arcana and numerology

Which journal prompts can you use with the personal arcana?

Published on

To use the personal arcana in a journal, pick one open question at a time and answer it in writing, with real examples from your week. Questions about when the card's theme shows up, how it gets exaggerated and what small action it suggests work with any of the 22 arcana.

Why writing works better than just reading

Reading a card's meaning is quick and easy to forget. Writing forces you to connect the theme to concrete situations, like a hard conversation, a postponed decision or a day when everything flowed.

A journal also builds memory. A few months from now you can reread your answers and notice what repeated, without relying on vague recollections.

Six prompts to get started

Pick one prompt per session, and do not try to answer them all at once. Try writing for ten minutes and stop when the ideas run out, without forcing it.

If a prompt gives you nothing, skip to the next one. Coming back to it in another week may bring answers that do not exist today.

  • In what situation this week did my card's theme show up?
  • What does it look like when it is healthy, and when it is exaggerated?
  • What does the image on the card make me feel today, before I read any meaning?
  • Which part of the traditional description does not fit me, and why?
  • What small gesture, taking less than an hour, would honor this theme?
  • What would I say to a friend who had the same card?

An example with card 4, The Emperor

Imagine a fictional person with personal arcana 4. On the first prompt, they write that they organized the family schedule and felt useful. On the second, they admit that, when exaggerated, the theme turns into irritation with people who change the plans.

On the fifth prompt, they decide to leave one afternoon of the week completely unplanned. None of this predicts the future, but it gives them a concrete experiment, and a record to compare against later.

Cautions when writing

Avoid sentences like “I am this way because this is my card.” The personal arcana describes a symbolic theme, not an explanation for what you do. Prefer saying that the theme shows up, rather than that the card causes it.

If the writing brings up strong distress, stop and seek professional support. The personal arcana has no scientific proof and does not replace therapy, or medical, legal or financial guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I write each day?
There is no rule. Ten minutes once or twice a week is usually enough, and what matters is keeping the habit light.
Do I need the site's journal to do this?
No, any notebook works. The site's journal is an option for keeping readings and notes in one place.
What if I don't know what to answer?
Write exactly that. Noting that you do not know, and coming back to the question later, is also part of the process.

Educational content, for reflection. Tarot does not replace medical, legal or financial advice.
