Comparisons and differences
Oracle deck or tarot: what is the difference between the two?
Published on
Tarot follows a fixed structure of 78 cards, with 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits. An oracle deck has no standard structure: the number of cards, the theme and the kind of message vary with whoever created it. That makes tarot a system and an oracle deck a freer tool.
A fixed system or free creation
Tarot has a well-known organization: arcana, suits and numbered cards. A reader in London and one in São Paulo, even with different decks, are talking about the same structure, which makes it easier to learn and to swap experiences.
Oracle decks, on the other hand, are created freely. They can have 30, 44, 52 cards or any other number, and revolve around angels, animals, plants, affirmations or themes invented by the author.
How each one is read
In tarot, a reading combines image, number, suit and position. The structure allows for patterns, such as noticing that many Swords showed up in the same spread.
In an oracle deck, the reading is usually more direct. Each card carries a short message, often described in the booklet, and the spread tends to be simple, with one or a few cards.
Comparison in a table
The points below show the differences that come up most in practice.
| Aspect | Tarot | Oracle deck |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | 78 cards, Major and Minor Arcana | Free, defined by the author |
| Theme | Human life in a broad sense | Any theme, such as animals or affirmations |
| Style of message | Open, depends on interpretation | More direct, often guided by a booklet |
| Learning | Deeper, with more symbols | Faster, depends on the deck |
| Limit | Can feel intimidating at first | Less standardization between decks |
How to choose between the two
If you want a symbolic language you can deepen for years, tarot is a good doorway. If you are looking for short messages with a welcoming tone, an oracle deck can be pleasant and easy to use.
It is worth remembering that neither has been proven to work as a form of prediction. They work well as invitations to reflect, and your own judgment remains the main piece.
If you are unsure, try both for two weeks: an oracle card in the morning and a tarot card in the evening, noting what each one stirred up. At the end, you will have a concrete idea of which language fits your way of thinking best.
Frequently asked questions
- Is tarot a type of oracle?
- In a broad sense, yes, because it is used to consult symbols. But in the deck market, oracle usually means a deck outside tarot's 78-card structure.
- Is an oracle deck easier?
- In general it is quicker to start, because the messages are short. But each deck has its own logic, so you need to read the booklet.
- Can I mix oracle cards with tarot?
- You can, as a personal experiment, but many people prefer to keep them separate so the languages do not get confused. Mixing also dilutes the structure of tarot.
