How do you craft questions that lead to good tarot readings?
Published on
A good tarot question is open, focuses on you and your actions, and does not seek a prediction. Instead of “will he come back?”, ask “what do I need to understand about this relationship?”. Questions that begin with “how” and “what” give clearer, more useful readings than yes-or-no ones.
Swap yes-or-no for open questions
Closed questions expect a verdict and leave the reading shallow. Cards are images, and images answer “what” and “how” better than “yes” or “no.”
An open question also hands the lead back to you. Instead of waiting to see what will happen, you explore how you can act.
- Instead of “will I get the job?”, ask “what can I do to prepare better?”.
- Instead of “does he like me?”, ask “what am I feeling and what do I want in this relationship?”.
- Instead of “will it work out?”, ask “what should I consider before deciding?”.
Focus on what is within your reach
Questions about other people's thoughts and decisions cannot be answered by the cards and tend to breed anxiety. Turn the focus back to what you feel, choose and can do.
Also avoid questions about health, diagnosis or legal matters. In those cases, the right path is a professional, and tarot enters at most as a moment of personal reflection.
Write the question before drawing the cards
Putting the question on paper forces clarity. Reread it, cut what is vague and confirm it is really what you want to know. Often, just by writing it you notice what was behind the doubt.
Record the question in your journal along with the cards. Later, when you review the reading, you will remember exactly what you asked and how the answer relates to it.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I ask tarot yes-or-no questions?
- You can, but the result tends to be more superficial. Open questions make better use of the cards' symbolism.
- Can I ask what another person is thinking?
- It is best to avoid it. The cards do not read anyone's mind, and this kind of question tends to feed anxiety. Ask about what you feel and what you can do.
- How many questions should I ask per reading?
- One question per reading is ideal. Several questions at once scatter your attention and make interpretation harder.
