How does the year card change from one year to the next?

Published on

The year card changes because only the year goes back into the math: your birth month and day stay the same. Usually, each birthday adds 1 to the total, so the card moves forward one step, until the digit sum of the year jumps and the sequence picks up again from a lower number.

What changes and what stays the same

In the year card, the birth month and day stay fixed. What renews is the year of the cycle, and the digits of that year are added up as in the personal arcana. That is why the card changes on each birthday and not on December 31.

Because the following year usually has a digit sum one unit higher, the total goes up by 1 each time. This makes the year card move forward one card at a time, as long as the result stays within the range of 1 to 22.

Example with a made-up date: 11/07

Imagine a fictional person whose birthday is November 7. The math for each cycle is 11 + 7 + the digits of the year. In 2024: 11 + 7 + 8 = 26, which reduces to 8, Strength. In 2025: 27, which reduces to 9, The Hermit. In 2026: 28, which reduces to 10, Wheel of Fortune. In 2027: 29, which reduces to 11, Justice.

In 2028 the jump appears: the digits of 2028 add up to 12, so the total is 11 + 7 + 12 = 30, which reduces to 3, The Empress. Then come 2029 (4, The Emperor), 2030 (5, The Hierophant) and 2031 (6, The Lovers).

  • 2024: total 26, card 8, Strength.
  • 2025: total 27, card 9, The Hermit.
  • 2026: total 28, card 10, Wheel of Fortune.
  • 2027: total 29, card 11, Justice.
  • 2028: total 30, card 3, The Empress.

Why does the sequence jump?

When the total goes above 22, the reduction adds its digits and the number suddenly drops. That is what happened between 29 and 30: 29 becomes 11, and 30 becomes 3. The small regularity of moving forward one step breaks the moment the digit sum changes tens.

This also shows that there is no fixed order of cards for your future. The sequence depends on your date and the sums, not on a destiny laid out in advance.

How to use this information

Looking at past cycles can be a good exercise: compare the card of a year you lived through with what you remember about that period. The goal is to train reflection, not to prove the card was right.

The year card is a symbolic tradition with no scientific proof. Do not use the sequence to decide on health, money or legal matters.

Frequently asked questions

Does the year card always move forward one step per year?
Almost always, because the following year usually adds one more unit. When the total goes above 22 and gets reduced, the card can jump to a lower number.
Can I calculate the card for future years?
Yes, just swap the year in the sum. But it is a symbolic theme to reflect on, not a prediction of what will happen.
Does the year card change on January 1?
No. The site uses the birthday-to-birthday cycle, so the change happens on the date of your birthday.
