What grounding exercises should you do before reading tarot?

Published on

Grounding is any short practice that brings your attention to your body and the present moment. Before reading tarot, slow breathing, the five senses exercise and feeling your feet on the floor all work well. In two or three minutes you arrive at the reading with less hurry and more clarity.

Why ground yourself before reading

Whoever sits down agitated tends to read hurry, fear or anxiety into the cards. One minute of pause does not change the cards, but it changes your attention, and attention is what makes a reading worthwhile.

Grounding also helps you notice how you are doing. If you realize your body is very tense or that the question is born of panic, maybe the best thing is not to read right now.

Three two-minute exercises

Pick one and use the same one for a few days. Repetition turns the exercise into a signal for your body, which learns that it is time to slow down.

None of them requires any materials. They can be done sitting down, with the cards still put away.

  • 4 and 6 breathing: inhale counting to four and exhale counting to six, for six cycles.
  • Five senses: name five things you see, four you touch, three you hear, two you smell and one you taste.
  • Feet on the floor: plant both feet, feel your body's weight in the chair and squeeze and release your hands three times.

Finish with a minute of silence and a question

After the exercise, stay for a minute in silence, without checking your phone. Then write the question in one sentence. If it comes full of “what if” and “will it,” rewrite it in an open format, like “what do I need to see about this?”

This small gap between the exercise and the cards is what sustains the calm. Shuffling with a quieter mind makes the reading less reactive.

Grounding does not treat anxiety

These exercises are everyday supports and help many people, but they do not treat anxiety disorders or depression. If you feel you need them for everything, or if tightness in your chest is frequent, see a health professional.

In moments of crisis, the CVV (Brazil's free emotional support line) answers at 188, at any hour and at no cost. Asking for help is part of self-care, and the cards can wait.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to ground myself every time I read?
It is not required, but it helps, especially on restless days. Two minutes already make a difference, and you can vary the exercise.
Is grounding the same thing as meditation?
Not exactly. Grounding is shorter and more practical, focused on bringing attention to the body. Meditation can be longer and have other goals.
What if I feel worse while doing the exercises?
Stop and do something that calms you, like walking or drinking water. If this keeps happening, talk to a mental health professional.
