Who Was Pamela Colman Smith, the Artist Behind the Rider-Waite Tarot?

Published on

Pamela Colman Smith (1878 to 1951) was an Anglo-American artist and illustrator who drew all 78 cards of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, published in 1909. For decades the deck carried only Waite's name. Today her name is usually added to the title to recognize her visual authorship.

Who the artist was

Pamela Colman Smith was born in London in 1878 and spent part of her childhood in Jamaica. She worked as an illustrator, set designer and storyteller, and moved in artistic and theatrical circles in London and New York.

She also had contact with British esoteric circles, including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the same one Waite belonged to.

Her work on the deck

Smith drew every card in the deck, and it was she who gave visual form to the scenes of the numbered cards, working from Waite's guidance. Her line is expressive, with theatrical gestures and clear compositions, which helps reading even for beginners.

In her day, illustrators rarely received credit proportional to their contribution. That is why Smith's name stayed out of the titles for decades, and her importance has only recently been discussed again.

Why her name matters today

Calling the deck Rider-Waite-Smith is a way of acknowledging that the images millions of people read were created by her. Many modern editions and books already use the full name.

To learn more, it is worth consulting biographies, exhibition catalogs and museum collections that hold the artist's works, and comparing a variety of sources.

Frequently asked questions

Did Pamela Colman Smith create tarot?
No. She illustrated the 1909 deck created in partnership with Arthur Edward Waite, but tarot is much older than both of them, coming from the Italian tarocchi of the 15th century.
Why does the deck sometimes appear as just Rider-Waite?
Because for a long time only the names of the publisher and the mastermind were used. Adding Smith to the title is a more recent correction.
Did Smith make other work besides tarot?
Yes. She illustrated books and worked on posters and theater, and her works are held in museum and library collections.
