What is a cartomancer and what do they do?

Published on

A cartomancer is a person who reads cards, whether tarot, Lenormand or an ordinary playing deck, to offer guidance or reflect on a question. The term comes from cartomancy. In Brazil it is common and broad, and is used for any card reader, including tarot readers.

Who is a cartomancer

A cartomancer is someone who practices cartomancy, that is, the reading of cards. They may work with tarot, Lenormand (known in Brazil as Baralho Cigano), an ordinary 52-card deck or other oracles. The term describes the practice, not the method.

A tarot reader, by contrast, is someone who works specifically with tarot. Every tarot reader is a cartomancer, but not every cartomancer reads tarot.

What to expect from a session

In a typical session, the cartomancer receives the question, shuffles, draws the cards and interprets. The style varies: some talk a lot, others say little and let the person draw their own conclusions. It depends on the professional and the school.

Look for someone who treats the reading as reflection, without promising certainties. No card reading has been scientifically proven to predict the future, and a good professional usually makes that clear.

  • Question agreed on before the cards.
  • Interpretation open to dialogue.
  • No absolute promises and no pressure for further sessions.

Cartomancer, tarot reader and other names

In popular use, cartomancer carries a more traditional image, tied to in-person consultations. Tarot reader sounds more modern and is usually chosen by people who favor a self-knowledge approach.

The choice of term does not indicate quality. What matters is the professional's attitude and respect for the autonomy of the person consulting.

Frequently asked questions

Are a cartomancer and a tarot reader the same thing?
They are close, but not identical. A cartomancer reads any deck, and a tarot reader works specifically with tarot.
Does a cartomancer predict the future?
Many use the reading with that intention, but there is no scientific proof of prediction. A healthier use is to treat the cards as a mirror for reflection.
How do I choose a good cartomancer?
Prefer someone who explains their method, respects your limits and makes no promises of results or charges for supposed work to solve your problems.
