What is a card's position in a spread?
Published on
A position is the place a card occupies in a tarot spread, defined in advance and tied to a role, such as past, obstacle or advice. The position gives the reading its context: the same card can take on a different meaning depending on where it lands.
What the position does
The card brings the symbol and the position brings the question. It is the position that tells you whether the Three of Swords is speaking of what has passed, of what you are living now or of what you need to watch.
That is why memorizing a card's meaning is not enough. Without understanding the function of the place where it landed, the interpretation tends to stay generic.
A practical example
Imagine The Tower in two positions. If it lands in the place of the past, it may speak of a rupture that has already happened and needs to be digested. If it lands in the place of advice, it may suggest that something unstable deserves to be rethought carefully.
The image is the same, but the message changes. That flexibility is part of what makes a reading richer, and also the reason a reading demands attention.
- Past: what shaped the situation.
- Present: how things stand now.
- Obstacle: what makes it harder.
- Advice: an attitude to consider.
How to work with positions
Before turning the cards over, reread the name of each position. Then turn them one at a time, in the order set by the spread, and read the image first, connecting it to the role of the place only afterward.
Write the positions in your journal along with the question. That way, when you reread the reading days later, you remember what each place meant.
Frequently asked questions
- Can the position change a card's meaning?
- It can change the focus. The card's symbol stays the same, but the position indicates which aspect of the question it speaks to.
- Does every spread have fixed positions?
- Generally, yes. Established spreads, like the Celtic Cross, have well-known positions, but they vary between authors. The best approach is to follow the version you chose.
- Can I change the name of a position?
- You can, as long as you define it before drawing the cards and keep the same criteria throughout the reading.
