What do reversed cards mean in tarot?

Published on

A reversed card is one that shows up upside down in the spread. It can point to blocked, delayed, internal or excessive energy, or suggest the opposite of the upright meaning. It is an optional choice: many readers do not use reversals, and beginners can skip them with no harm done.

What does a reversed card indicate?

There is no single rule. In general, a reversal suggests that the card's theme is blocked, excessive, lacking or turned inward. Some traditions read it as the opposite of the upright meaning, others as a softer or more intense version.

Take The Sun as an example. Upright, it speaks of clarity and vitality. Reversed, it may point to a joy that is hard to feel or to exaggerated optimism, and the reading depends on the question.

Three ways to read a reversed card

Choose one approach and stick with it for a while, so you can see how it works for you.

  • Blockage: the card's energy exists, but it is stuck or has no room.
  • Excess or lack: the theme shows up too much or too little, out of balance.
  • Inwardness: what the card shows is happening on the inside and has not been expressed yet.

Do I need to use reversed cards?

No. The meanings are already broad and, for someone just starting out, reversals can add confusion. You can turn each card upright as you draw it and learn the deck first.

Once you feel comfortable, try including reversals in a short spread, such as the three-card spread. Write down what you felt and compare it with what happens afterward, using a reading journal.

Example of a reading with a reversed card

Imagine you ask about a project and draw Strength reversed. Upright, Strength speaks of quiet courage and mastery over your own impulses. Reversed, it may suggest insecurity, tiredness or a strength you have not tapped into yet.

The reading would then shift from “you can do it” to “what is draining your confidence?” That is the usefulness of a reversal: it invites you to look at what lies beneath the theme, rather than declaring an outcome.

Notice that the card is still Strength. You are not learning a new meaning, just seeing the same symbol in a different light, and that makes reversals easier than they seem.

Frequently asked questions

Is a reversed card always negative?
No. A reversal does not turn the card into something bad. It usually shows a different side of the theme, such as a blockage, an excess or something still held back.
Should beginners use reversed cards?
It is not required. Many beginners prefer to learn the upright meanings first and add reversals later, once they feel more confident.
How can I tell if a card came up reversed in the Tarot de Marseille?
As with most decks, the card is reversed when the image appears upside down. Some figures are symmetrical, which makes the position harder to identify.
