What do the colors mean in tarot cards?

Published on

Colors in tarot help set the mood of each card, but they have no fixed meaning. Yellow is often linked to clarity, red to action and passion, white to purity, blue to intuition and black to the unknown. These associations vary between decks and readers.

Do colors have a fixed meaning?

No. Colors are one of the most symbolic elements of a card, but they depend on who illustrated the deck and on context. The same color can suggest warmth in one card and danger in another, so reading works best when you look at the whole picture.

In Marseille decks, colors were applied flat, usually in a limited set of tones, and they vary from one edition to another. In the Rider-Waite-Smith, the artist used color with more scenic intent, and each card has its own color mood.

Common associations and examples

In the Rider-Waite-Smith, yellow is frequent in the backgrounds and suggests light, an awake mind and openness. In The Fool, the yellow sky reinforces the air of a light beginning. Red appears in clothes, flowers and banners and usually gives the idea of energy, desire or vitality, as in the roses surrounding The Magician.

White is widely used to suggest purity, silence or something new, like the white horse in The Sun. Blue often appears in water and in cloaks, and is read as tied to emotion and intuition, as in The High Priestess. Black appears in backgrounds and armor, and can suggest an ending, mystery or protection.

  • Yellow: clarity, mind, light.
  • Red: action, passion, vitality.
  • White: purity, beginnings, silence.
  • Blue: emotion, intuition, depth.
  • Black: mystery, limits, closure.

How to use colors in a reading

Instead of memorizing a table, first look at the card's dominant color and ask what feeling it brings. A card full of blue and gray might give an impression of calm or distance, and the question is what that says about your situation.

Then compare it with the traditional symbolism. If your deck uses colors different from those described in books, give priority to what is drawn on it. The colors of a modern edition may have been chosen by the artist without following any system.

Frequently asked questions

Do tarot colors come from the Golden Dawn?
Part of the color symbolism in esoteric tarot comes from orders like the Golden Dawn, but much of the color in the cards is the illustrator's choice. That is why not every color should be read as a code.
Does color change a card's meaning?
It changes the mood. The basic meaning comes from the card's theme, and color helps you sense the emotional tone of the scene.
Do black-and-white cards work?
They do, and many people use them. Without color, attention goes to gestures, shapes and composition, which can be a good reading exercise.
