Myths and questions

Is tarot the devil's work?

Published on

It depends on each person's religious perspective. Tarot is a symbolic deck, and The Devil card represents attachments and chains, not worship of anything. Some traditions oppose the practice, and that deserves respect. Each person can decide what fits their own faith.

What The Devil card really shows

The Devil is one of the most feared cards in the deck, but its message is psychological. It shows figures chained of their own accord, suggesting addictions, attachments, dependencies and situations in which we trap ourselves without noticing. Often, the chains are loose.

In a reading, the card invites you to ask: what holds me back? What can I let go of? The message is one of liberation, not of worship. Its presence in the deck does not make the whole a malevolent practice.

Different views on the subject

Some religious traditions see practices of divination as a turning away from faith and therefore advise against them. Others see no problem, and others consider tarot part of their symbolic repertoire. All of these positions are part of living alongside different beliefs.

Respecting does not mean agreeing with everything. It means not ridiculing those who are bothered by tarot, and not condemning those who use it for reflection. Many quarrels begin with the assumption that the other person has bad intentions.

  • If your faith guides you against it, follow what you believe.
  • If you use tarot for reflection, explain that without judging those who think differently.
  • At home, talk calmly and listen to the reason before arguing.

How the devil's image got into the deck

Tarot imagery was born in a Christian world, where the devil was a common cultural figure. That is why, alongside other cards, you find depictions such as Death, The Tower and Judgement. They belonged to the visual vocabulary of the time.

Understanding this helps show that the card is an illustration of an idea, that of being dominated by impulses, and not an invitation to anything supernatural. Each reader decides how to relate to that image.

If the doubt is weighing on you

If you feel fear or guilt about using tarot, it is worth talking to someone you trust in your community and respecting your own limit. If the fear is strong, a psychologist can help. You don't need to read cards to be a better person, and you can stop whenever you want.

Frequently asked questions

Is The Devil card bad news?
No. It speaks of attachments and chains, and works as an invitation to recognize what you could let go of. It is not a warning of evil.
Does reading tarot attract bad things?
There is no evidence of that. Tarot is a deck of images, and the cards have no power to attract anything at all.
Can I explain tarot to my religious family?
Yes. Explain that you use it to reflect, without pressuring anyone to accept it. If the conversation gets difficult, respect each person's pace.

Educational content, for reflection. Tarot does not replace medical, legal or financial advice.
