How do you start reading the court cards in tarot?

Published on

The court cards (Page, Knight, Queen and King) can be read as styles of acting: the Page learns, the Knight moves, the Queen nurtures and the King commands. The suit tells you how: Wands with energy, Cups with emotion, Swords with mind and Pentacles with practicality.

Why do court cards seem hard?

There are 16 of them, with similar faces and names that repeat across four suits, which is confusing at first. They can also represent a person, a behavior of yours or a phase of the situation, and that flexibility leaves many people unsure.

The good news is that there is a simple logic behind them. By separating the rank (Page, Knight, Queen, King) from the suit, each card becomes a combination of two ideas rather than sixteen separate meanings.

What does each rank mean?

The Page represents beginnings and curiosity: a message, a lesson, someone or something still taking shape. The Knight brings movement and intensity, with the risk of excess or haste. The Queen shows inner maturity, care and sensitivity. The King brings mastery, responsibility and leadership.

These readings are traditional but flexible. In another deck or tradition, the names and associations may vary, so check the guide for the deck you use.

  • Page: curiosity, a message, the start of learning.
  • Knight: action, movement, enthusiasm and haste.
  • Queen: nurturing, inner maturity, intuition.
  • King: authority, mastery, responsibility.

How does the suit change the reading?

Add the rank to the suit. The Queen of Cups is emotional maturity: sensitivity and empathy. The Queen of Swords is mental maturity: clarity, frankness and discernment. Same rank, different styles.

The same goes for the Knight. The Knight of Wands acts fast and with enthusiasm, while the Knight of Pentacles is slow and methodical. Thinking this way, you work out the meaning instead of memorizing it.

Is the court card a person, or is it me?

It can be both, and there is no single rule. In a reading about work, the King of Pentacles might describe a real boss or the steady stance you need to take on. Ask yourself which reading makes more sense for the question.

A useful tip is to start by reading the behavior: what attitude does this card suggest right now? Only then ask whether someone in your life fits it. Avoid claiming the card describes one specific person, because that leads to hasty conclusions.

Frequently asked questions

Do court cards always point to real people?
Not always. They can point to someone, to an aspect of yourself or to a phase of the situation. The context of the question helps you decide.
Can I learn the court cards last?
Yes. Many students leave these cards until after the Major Arcana and the numbered cards, because they take a bit more practice.
Are the Knight and the Page the same thing in other decks?
Names vary between decks and traditions. Some swap Page for Princess and Knight for Prince, so check your deck's guide.
