First steps
How do you prepare a new tarot deck before your first reading?
Published on
Preparing a new deck means getting to know it before you use it: take it out of the plastic, go through all 78 cards one by one, shuffle until they soften, and pick a simple way to begin. No ritual is required. The goal is to become familiar with the images and make the deck comfortable in your hands.
What is the first step with a new deck?
Before asking any question, just look at the cards. Take the deck out of the box, check that all 78 are there, and go through them one by one, slowly, without trying to recall any meaning. This first contact is for noticing colors, figures, objects and the overall feeling of each image.
Many new decks come in factory order, from the Major Arcana through the suits. Use that order to see the deck as a story: from The Fool to The World, then Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Only after that does it make sense to shuffle.
- Check that all 78 cards are in the deck.
- Go through the cards one by one, in silence, looking only at the images.
- Set aside the booklet or guide that comes with the deck, if there is one.
How do you break in and shuffle new cards?
New cards tend to be stiff and slippery, which makes shuffling hard. A few minutes of handling helps: shuffle a little at a time, in small portions, without forcing or bending them. If the card stock is very glossy, spreading the cards on the table and mixing them with your hands is usually easier.
This is a good moment to test the method that suits you best. If you need ideas, our guide on how to shuffle shows alternatives to the classic overhand shuffle. Pick one and stick with it, because consistency helps you read with fewer distractions.
Do I need a cleansing or consecration ritual?
You don't. Rituals are a personal choice: for some people, lighting a candle or taking a deep breath marks the start of the practice and helps them focus. For others, sitting down calmly and opening the deck is enough. Neither approach makes a reading more or less valid.
If you want a simple gesture that doesn't depend on any belief, try this: before each session, silence your phone, drink a glass of water and write your question on a sheet of paper. This prepares you, not the deck, and that is where preparation really makes a difference.
How do you do the first spread with a new deck?
Start small. Draw a single card and answer three things: what do I see in the image, what feeling does it bring me, and how does that relate to my day? Write it down in two or three lines, without consulting the guide before you give your own reading.
Once you have your first impression, then open the guide and compare. Noticing where your reading and the tradition meet is the best way to learn. Remember that tarot does not predict the future in any proven way: it works as a mirror for reflecting on what you are already living.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use a new tarot deck as soon as I open the box?
- Yes. It's worth looking at the cards first and breaking them in a little so shuffling feels comfortable. There is no waiting period and no ritual requirement.
- Do I need to store the deck in a special way?
- No. Keeping it in the original box, in a cloth or in a small pouch protects the cards from humidity and wear. The choice is practical and personal.
- Is it true that you can't buy your own deck?
- That is a popular superstition with no basis in tarot history. You can buy your own deck and use it normally, and choosing the one you like best is even recommended.
