How do you lay out a tarot spread on the table, step by step?

Published on

To lay out a tarot spread, choose the format, ask your question, shuffle, cut the deck and turn the cards over one by one into the positions of the layout. Keep the table clear and respect the order of the positions before you begin interpreting.

Prepare the space and the question

Choose a clean table and a moment without interruptions. You do not need an elaborate ritual: the goal is to create attention, and a minute of silence already does that.

Write down your question and the spread you will use. Knowing in advance how many cards and positions you will have avoids improvising in the middle of the reading.

Step-by-step layout

The process is similar for almost every spread. The difference lies in the final layout of the positions.

  • Shuffle while thinking of your question, until you feel it is enough.
  • Cut the deck or pick the top cards, whichever way you prefer.
  • Turn the cards over in the order of the positions, without skipping or swapping places.
  • Take in the whole layout before reading the first card.

Common spread layouts

The card of the day and the three-card spread sit in a straight line. The Love Tarot and the Career & Prosperity spread use five cards, with three on top and two below.

The Horseshoe fans the cards out in an arc, while the Celtic Cross combines a cross and a column beside it. On the site, the table already draws each spread in the correct arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special cloth to read tarot?
It is not required. A cloth only protects the cards and helps create a focused mood, but the reading works without it.
How long should I shuffle the cards?
There is no fixed rule. Shuffle until you feel ready, usually for a minute or two.
Can I turn the cards over in a different order?
It is better to keep the order of the positions. Each position has a question, and swapping them changes the meaning of the reading.
