Symbolism
A horned figure with bat wings and an inverted torch occupies a pedestal. At his feet, a nude man and woman with small horns and tails are chained by the neck, but the chains are loose: they could slip free. The inverted pentagram above the Devil's head is spirit subjected to matter. The number 15 is temptation and attachment to material pleasures and fears.
Affirmation
“I recognize what binds me and choose freedom with awareness.”
Upright meaning
- attachment
- addiction
- shadow
- temptation
- self-imposed chains
- General
- The Devil shows where you have bound yourself: to habits, relationships, beliefs or fears that seem inescapable but whose chains are loose. The card shines light on the shadow and on pleasure that enslaves, inviting honesty. Recognizing the bond is already the beginning of freedom. Not everything here is negative: it also speaks of desire, vitality and personal power.
- Love
- Intense attraction, but also a risk of dependency, jealousy, possessiveness or toxic patterns. As a couple, look at what binds and what nourishes. If single, beware of addictive infatuations and the need for validation.
- Work & money
- Attachment to a draining job, ambition that takes over or a strained relationship with money. Notice whether you are held by fear or by comfort. If compulsion is involved, seek professional support.
- Advice
- Name without judgment what binds you and one small step to loosen the chain. Ask for help if you need it.
Reversed meaning
- liberation
- breaking free
- awareness
- detachment
- relapse
- General
- Reversed, the Devil indicates the beginning of liberation: the chain loosens, awareness of the pattern grows and you reclaim your power. The path can be uncomfortable, with relapses or the temptation to return to the familiar. It can also point to denial, when you still deny what binds you. Freedom comes with responsibility.
- Love
- Breaking with a pattern or relationship that held you, or awareness of a dependency. As a couple, it is possible to rebuild on freer bases. If single, you are clearer about what you no longer accept.
- Work & money
- Leaving a draining situation, breaking financial dependencies or a job that suffocated. Plan the transition to be sustainable. Beware of relapse into old habits.
- Advice
- Sustain the change with support and routine, and be kind about relapses. Make choices that protect your freedom.
