# What is an oracle?

> An oracle is a deck or system of symbols used for consultation and reflection, without tarot's fixed structure of 78 cards. It can have free themes, such as angels, animals or phrases. The term comes from antiquity, when an oracle was also the place or person who gave answers.

## Origin of the term

Oracle comes from the Latin oraculum, from orare, to speak. In ancient Greece and Rome, the name designated the place, the priest or the answer given to someone who asked a question, as in the famous Oracle of Delphi.

Over time, the word came to name any symbolic system of consultation, including modern decks.

## Oracle and tarot

Tarot has a fixed structure: 78 cards, 22 Major and 56 Minor in four suits. An oracle deck does not follow that structure. Each creator defines the number of cards, the themes and the reading rules.

This gives freedom, but it asks for attention. Without the common base of tarot, it is essential to read the author's guidebook to understand how the cards were conceived.

- Tarot: 78 cards in a fixed structure.
- Oracle: free number of cards and its own themes.
- Both work as symbolic tools for reflection.

## Examples of oracles

Lenormand (known in Brazil as Baralho Cigano), in its Petit Lenormand form, is often classified as an oracle because it has its own structure of 36 cards. There are also oracles of angels, animals, goddesses and phrases.

Some readers combine oracle and tarot in the same session, using the first for quick advice. It is a matter of style.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Lenormand an oracle?

Many classify it that way, since it has its own structure of 36 cards and reading rules different from those of tarot.

### Is an oracle easier than tarot?

It depends on the deck. Some have fewer cards and direct images, but ease varies with the author and the guidebook.

### Can I mix an oracle and tarot?

You can, as long as you keep clear criteria for each deck. Mixing without a method makes rereading and note-taking harder.
